THE TECHNOLOGY BEHIND THE GLOVE

A glove has to meet several opposing requirements at the same time: it needs to retain heat, regulate moisture, protect against wind and water, while maintaining freedom of movement and comfort. These exact requirements were the starting point for the development of the CLEW Multi-Layer Gloves.

Instead of combining all these functions into a single construction — inevitably creating compromises between warmth, moisture management, protection, and comfort — we developed the glove from the ground up as a modular 3-layer system. The principle is inspired by technical outdoor apparel: each layer performs a clearly defined function. It is only through the interaction of all three layers that the desired overall performance is achieved.

THREE LAYERS. THREE FUNCTIONS.

The innermost layer, the LINER, forms the direct interface with the hand. It uses Polartec® Power Stretch™, an elastic material made from 84% recycled polyester and 16% elastane. The construction combines a high degree of freedom of movement with a close-to-the-body fit, while also supporting rapid moisture transfer.

The liner dries quickly and helps maintain a comfortable, dry microclimate inside the glove. The fingertips are also touchscreen-compatible, ensuring functionality even when interacting with devices.

The PUFF sits above the liner and provides thermal insulation. We use PrimaLoft® Black Insulation ThermoPlume™ — a fiber technology developed to combine the warmth of down with the practical advantages of synthetic insulation. The insulation provides approximately the equivalent of 550 Fill Power and retains its thermal performance even when exposed to moisture. At the same time, it can be highly compressed, reducing the overall pack size of the system. The outer material is made from 100% recycled polyester and features a PFC-free C0 DWR treatment as well as a cire finish on the reverse side.

The outermost layer is the HOOD. It provides weather protection and is designed with a 10,000 mm water column rating combined with high breathability. This creates a waterproof yet breathable barrier that keeps wind, snow, and moisture out while allowing moisture from inside to escape.

The palm has also been developed as a functional interface. It features a grip coating that increases abrasion resistance while providing secure grip and control — even in cold and wet conditions.

DEVELOPED AS A SYSTEM

What matters is not only the choice of individual materials, but also their function within the overall system. Polartec® Power Stretch™ manages moisture. PrimaLoft® ThermoPlume™ retains warmth. The TPU-laminated outer layer provides protection against the elements.
None of the three layers needs to compromise its function to compensate for the others. Each component was designed for a specific purpose and then integrated into a unified system.
The result is a glove that is not designed as a static product, but as an adaptable technical system. Depending on temperature, weather, and activity, the individual layers can be combined, removed, and used in different configurations. This creates up to six possible combinations of the individual layers.

Conditions in alpine environments are constantly changing. Temperature, precipitation, wind, and physical activity cannot be reduced to a single configuration. That is precisely why the system is designed to be modular.
