Tested by snowboard instructor Alex van Klaveren
Alex van Klaveren is a seasoned snowboard instructor with a strong focus on carving and technique. He has years of experience teaching riders of all levels while also pushing his own riding in performance-oriented conditions. For an extended period, he relied on the CLEW Freedom — a binding known for comfort and functionality, but one that shows clear limits in high-performance, carving-intensive situations. With this background, Alex tested the CLEW Independence over one and a half weeks in real teaching environments, on groomed runs, and during aggressive carving sessions.

The following sections summarize Alex’s personal observations and experience during this test.
IMMEDIATE RESPONSE
From the very first runs, the Independence stood out with a more direct connection to the board. Edge engagement happens faster, board reaction follows input almost immediately and high-speed turns feel more stable and composed.
For instructors, this precision matters. Students watch every movement, and delayed or inconsistent response is instantly noticeable.
CARVING PERFORMANCE
The largest improvement appears in carving.
Compared to the Freedom, the Independence brings the board onto edge more quickly and holds it with greater stability. Backside carves benefit especially from earlier pressure build-up, allowing smoother, more controlled arcs.
The redesigned highback, with stronger curvature and closer boot contact, supports this effect without requiring aggressive forward lean adjustments.
Summary for instructors and carving-focused riders:
Cleaner, more consistent edge hold, reduced effort during dynamic turns and direct, precise response under pressure.
The Freedom remains forgiving and comfortable, but the Independence clearly prioritizes precision.
STEP-IN SYSTEM IN PRACTICE
Daily teaching requires frequent entry and exit.
The Independence’s updated step-in system proved smoother and more reliable, engaging effortlessly even in cold conditions. This refinement supports instructors who repeatedly step in and out, saving time and maintaining consistency.
VERSATILITY FOR INSTRUCTION
With an additional base set, the Independence can be mounted quickly on multiple boards. This flexibility makes it ideal for instructors adapting to different students, terrains, and demonstration setups — all without sacrificing performance.
VERDICT
After intensive testing, the Independence emerges as a performance-focused evolution: Faster input-to-edge response, greater stability at speed, improved backside pressure transfer and refined, reliable step-in system. For instructors and carving-oriented riders who demand precision, it delivers measurable advantages over the Freedom.
FUTURE POTENTIAL
Additional development could focus on alternative highback options or modular spacer systems to further enhance backside edge grip for specialized carving.
Because in instruction and high-performance riding alike, precision isn’t optional — it’s essential.
